How Long Do Edibles Take to Kick In?

|Thomas Grima
Gr8Bake timeline of how long edibles take to work, 30 to 120 minutes

Usually 30 minutes to two hours. Most people feel something around the hour mark, with the strongest part between two and four hours in. The whole thing commonly lasts four to eight hours, and a strong one can leave you groggy the next morning.

The single most useful rule: once you have taken a piece, do not take any more for at least two hours. Nearly every bad edible story starts with someone deciding at minute 50 that it isn't working.

What changes the timing

Factor Effect on onset
Empty stomach Faster, and often feels sharper
Full or fatty meal Slower to arrive, sometimes stronger overall
Format Chocolate and gummies tend to arrive a little sooner than dense baked goods
Your tolerance Regular users feel it sooner and read the signs earlier
Body and metabolism Varies between people more than most factors on this list
Alcohol Makes the whole thing less predictable

A rough timeline

  1. 0–30 minutes: usually nothing. This is the stage where people make mistakes.
  2. 30–90 minutes: first signs for most people.
  3. 2–4 hours: the peak.
  4. 4–8 hours: gradual fade.
  5. Next morning: after a strong one, some grogginess is normal.

Plan the evening around that, not the other way round. An edible at 10pm is a decision about tomorrow morning as much as tonight.

Why it is slower than smoking

Eaten cannabis passes through your digestive system and liver before reaching your bloodstream, rather than going almost straight in through the lungs. That detour is why onset is slow, why effects last so much longer, and why the strength can feel different from the same amount smoked.

"It's not working"

Before taking more, check the clock. If it has been under two hours, wait. If a full two hours have passed and you genuinely feel nothing, you can take a small additional piece, half of what you started with, not another full one.

Some people absorb edibles poorly, so if that happens repeatedly, it may not be your format. Nothing about that is unusual.

If you took too much

Uncomfortable, but it passes. What helps:

  • Somewhere quiet, familiar and cool. Sit or lie down.
  • Water, and something plain to eat.
  • Someone with you if possible, even on the phone.
  • Remind yourself it will fade in a few hours.
  • No alcohol on top, and definitely no driving.

If someone is very unwell — chest pain, trouble breathing, won't wake properly — or a child or pet has eaten one, call 112 or go to hospital, and say what was taken. Being honest with medical staff matters more than being embarrassed.

Buying with timing in mind

Smaller pieces give you more control over the evening. If you are new to this, start with a pack of 7mg jellies rather than something strong you have to divide. The strengths guide explains how the per-piece numbers compare, and the edibles collection lists what we stock in Malta.

Frequently asked questions

How long until an edible kicks in on an empty stomach?

Often 30–60 minutes, and it can feel more abrupt than after a meal.

How long do edibles last?

Commonly four to eight hours, with the peak around two to four hours in.

Can I take more if I don't feel anything after an hour?

Wait the full two hours. If you still feel nothing, take half of your original piece.

Will I still feel it tomorrow?

After a strong edible, grogginess the next morning is common. Don't plan an early drive.

Does eating something make it wear off faster?

Not really, though food, water and rest make the wait more comfortable.
