The whole guide in one line: take 5–10mg, early in the evening, at home, with someone you trust, and do not take more for two hours.
Edibles are not difficult. They just punish impatience, because nothing happens for a while and then quite a lot happens at once.
What to buy first
A pack of small pieces, not one strong item. Something around 7–8mg per piece means your first dose is simply one piece, with no cutting and no arithmetic. The 7mg jellies are the usual starting point here, and ten pieces means several evenings rather than one commitment.
What to avoid for a first time: brownies, cakes and anything above 15mg a piece. Not because they are bad, but because dividing them accurately is harder than it looks.
Setting up the evening
- Pick the day. Not before work, not before driving, not before anything that needs you sharp the next morning.
- Eat something first. A normal meal, an hour or so before, makes the onset gentler.
- Start early. Around 7pm rather than 11pm, so the peak isn't at 3am.
- Stay home. First time is not the time for a bar or a party.
- Have company. Ideally someone who has done this before and is not taking one tonight.
- Skip the alcohol. Together they are unpredictable.
What the evening looks like
| Time | What is happening |
|---|---|
| 0–30 min | Nothing. This is normal. Do not take another piece. |
| 30–90 min | First signs: lighter mood, body feels heavier, music sounds better. |
| 2–4 hours | The strongest part. Appetite usually shows up here. |
| 4–8 hours | Fading. Many people simply fall asleep. |
| Next morning | Possibly a little slow. Plan accordingly. |
The one mistake everyone makes
Taking a second piece because the first "didn't work". At the 60-minute mark it often genuinely feels that way, and then both pieces arrive together at 90 minutes. If you take nothing else from this guide, take the two-hour rule.
If it gets uncomfortable
Too strong is unpleasant rather than dangerous, and it ends. Sit or lie down somewhere quiet and cool, drink water, eat something plain, and let someone know. Distraction helps: a familiar show rather than anything intense. It will fade within a few hours.
Call 112 if someone has chest pain, cannot breathe properly or cannot be woken and always if a child or pet has eaten one. Bring the packaging.
Who should not take one
- Anyone under 18.
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Anyone on medication or with a heart or mental health condition, without speaking to a doctor first.
- Anyone who needs to drive that day or the following morning.
After the first time
Note what you took, what you had eaten and how it went. Two or three evenings of that and you will know your own amount, which is worth more than any guide. From there, the strengths guide explains how to move up sensibly, and the format comparison covers gummies against chocolate and baked goods.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I take the first time?
5–10mg, which is one small piece. Wait two hours before considering anything more.
Should I eat before taking an edible?
Yes, a normal meal an hour or so beforehand usually makes for a gentler, more predictable experience.
How long before bed should I take one?
Three to four hours, so the peak passes while you are still awake.
Can I drink alcohol with an edible?
Better not to, especially the first time. The combination is harder to predict.
What if I feel nothing at all?
Some people absorb edibles poorly. After a full two hours, half of your original piece is a reasonable next step.
